S.C. Pannell Grenache Sunrise 99 2022

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaThis singular Blewitt Springs grenache is named Sunrise 99 because the old vines, planted way back in 1922, saw 99 sunrises before this vintage. When Stephen had the opportunity to purchase this special McLaren Vale 9 hectare vineyard in 2021 he jumped at the chance, the last in the long line of caretakers. The site, on sand at 140m, is dry farmed, east facing, and organically farmed, entirely by hand. Whole berries were native fermented in stainless and gently pressed and settled before heading to an old French vat for aging, bottled without fining or filtration in August 2023. Juicy and joyous, with a humming vibrato of energy drawing plum, boysenberry along a dusky palate, with fine, furry tannins pinning this young wine in place, and a fine pink peppercorn trail to finish. Such a special wine of site and intent, drinking beautifully now.Tasted: 30 December 2025Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
