Zarate Caiño Tinto 2023

Rías Baixas, Galicia, SpainSeventh-generation Eulogio Pomares runs this historic bodega today, continuing the legacy of quality started by his ancestors. His farming is almost fully biodynamic, and his inputs near nothing. Caiño tinto is one of the three indigenous grape varietals of Val do Salnes (loureiro tinto and espadeiro being the other two). Zarate have some of the only remnant plantings of these once-dominant local grapes, so you can think of this as a cultural heritage preservation project, as well as a delicious lighter red (though strangely in a massive and off-putting heavy weight bottle). This was sourced from granitic clay soils, and native fermented in open-top foudre before a year aging in second and third use French oak. Dusky dark plum, pencil shavings, pipe tobacco, wild blackberry, and thorns teem through this lifted 11.5% red, with tart cassis acidity, and soft, downy tannins, lingering with white pepper and kelp. This lighter, herbal red certainly does not suit its commanding packaging.Tasted: 04 November 2025Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
