The Fledge & Co. Vagabond 2020
Western Cape, South AfricaThe Fledge & Co is a small project from husband and wife winemaking duo Leon Coetzee and Margaux Nel (she an 8th generation winemaker). They're based in Klein Karoo's Calitzdorp, but source cool sites and growers around the Cape for their wines. This Vagabond blend of 33% Chenin Blanc 33%, 26% Chardonnay, 12% Roussanne, 9% Viura, 8% Viognier, 8% Grenache Blanc, and 4% Verdelho from from 13 different sites around the Western Cape, and up to 49 year old vines. Each is fermented separately, crushed with a few hours' skin contact prior to pressing, and resting in older 400L French casks over native ferment. One single barrel of whole cluster chardonnay was added for tannin interest. Some barrels go through MLF, and some don't. After 10 months, the barrel selection is made and the wine is blended into tank for 7 months' aging on lees. Pouring a golden yellow hue, this streams layers of honeysuckle, pine nut, lemon pith, and tangerine along a shining palate, with vibrant energy, and lingering fine salinity.
