The Fledge & Co Veld Versnit 2020
Jonkershoek Valley, Stellenbosch, Coastal Region, South AfricaThe Fledge & Co is a small project from husband and wife winemaking duo Leon Coetzee and Margaux Nel (she an 8th generation winemaker). They're based in Klein Karoo's Calitzdorp, but source cool sites and growers around the Cape for their wines. This field blend (veld versnit) of 70% Cinsault, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Alicante Bouchet comes from Stellenbosch's decomposed granites, with sandstone and koffieklip soils, surrounded by the Jonkershoek Mountains. Primarily destemmed (partial whole berry) this co-fermented in lagares 7 days before heading to older French barriques for 1 year. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Pipe tobacco, smoked stones, and dark soil scents the black plum and wild blackberry fruit underneath. Tannins are smoothed, and acidity is bright, making this a useful choice for grilled burgers.
