Idun Nuit Éternelle Syrah 2019

Elgin, Overberg, South AfricaIdun is a small, boutique winery run by the French-Danish Rousset family that resettled in the cool climate Elgin Valley. Idun is the Norse goddess of eternal life, fertility, and apples, which is fitting since Elgin has been long valued for its apple orchards. This syrah is rooted in sea facing southerly slopes on iron-rich sandstone at 200m. 40% was whole bunch in the native ferment before the wine rested 16 months in French barrels (30% new). Dusky wild blackberry, dark plum, and violets dance along the medium+ bodied palate, with supple, well integrated tannins, and alluring ample cracked peppercorn seasoning. The cool coastal climate keeps the acidity fresh, and this particularly food-friendly (ideally with grilled lamb or beef). Serious, cool climate syrah, and a project to watch. 5860 bottles.Tasted: 18 November 2025Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
