Comando G Rumbo Al Norte 2022

Sierra de Gredos, Madrid, SpainComando G is a partnership of minds, mates and winemakers Fernando García and Dani Landi. They were drawn to the near-forgotten high altitude old-vine vineyards of Sierra de Gredos, near Madrid, and began to gain the trust of the previous generation(s) who had tended to these wind-swept vines for the Co-ops. With time, came trust, and the chance to see these old vines into these in-demand wines. Rumbo Al Norte is from a single plot in the area known as La Breña in Villanueva de Ávila, a site that the boys have designated Grand Cru. There are massive erratics - giant boulders - in the middle of this biodynamically farmed vineyard, with goblet garnacha 70-75 years old, rooted in silty, sandy, quartzic granite at 1100m. This was native fermented in open oak vat with 100% whole bunches, with 60+ days of maceration before 2 years in a 1400L foudre, bottled without fining or filtration. From the warm 2022 vintage, this powerful wine opens with mulled plum, wild strawberry, and baked cherry, scented with scrubby resinous herbs and white pepper. Tannins are sinewy, giving a leathery hand to this mountain wine, finishing with a lingering swing of sarsaparilla. A big wine in a warming vintage, drinking now, but I would look for the recently released 2023. 1743 bottles.Tasted: 22 November 2025Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
