Henricsson Vineyard Deux Hivers Pinot Noir 2017
Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis small scale Naramata winery focuses on estate pinot noir and chardonnay, and you may recall the Henricsson name from the time when pinot noir fruit was sold to nearby Foxtrot. This wine comes from 5 clones across four organically farmed, own-rooted estate blocks, off vines 25-27 years old. Each was native fermented and aged separately, and then blended. This vintage was 45% whole cluster, transferred into 500L and 228L French barrels (32% new), where it remained over two winters (deux hivers). It was bottled unfined and unfiltered in early October 2019. The 2017 is current release, so the winery is certainly not playing the quick turnaround game. Showing age, with a bricking orange tint to the crimson-hued fruit, this wafts dried cherry, smoked stone, autumnal leaves, and baking spice along the fuller palate, with rhubarb acidity lifting to dried orange peel and a puff of warmth on the finish. Tannins are fine and sinewy, giving this reason to partner with autumnal wild mushroom dishes.
