Van Loggerenberg High Hopes 2023
Swartland, Coastal Region, South AfricaHigh Hopes (so named for first vintage when Lukas was in hospital with Covid over 8 days) blends 92% syrah (100% whole bunch fruit on blue slate) with 8% Grenache (destemmed, from iron rich shale). All the fruit is dry-farmed Swartland and native fermented in stainless with 3 weeks' skin contact, with the Grenache pressed off into older French oak, while the Syrah saw time in concrete and an old foudre. After 11 months, they were blended, and bottled without fining or filtration, though with a touch of protective SO2. This lovely, lighter, joyous red is full of scrubby herbs scenting boysenberry and wild raspberry, with fine tannins hugging the sides through a pink peppercorn finish. Energy is humming throughout, carrying essences of both grapes but transforming to something ethereal and other. Such a charmer.Tasted: 06 August 2025Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:| ON | $32.00 | 750ml | LCBO |
