Western Cape, South AfricaVan Loggerenberg Wines is a family-run winery based in Paarl, making low-intervention, site-specific wines from vineyards mainly in the Stellenbosch and Swartland appellations. Lukas Van Loggerenberg is one of SA's top indie winemakers, and a hit with somms and media worldwide. This old vine chenin comes from a two special blocks across the Western Cape. The biggest portion, 65%, is off a bush vine block in the Paardeberg's decomposed granites (Swartland), and 35% comes from the Polkadraai hills of Stellenbosch (granite). The parcels are vinified separately, destemmed, pressed and settled in stainless overnight before moving to 3rd fill French oak 500L. It remained there for native ferment on full lees with no bâtonnage over 10 months. Focused and driven, with crystalline lemon, pear skin, elderflower, chamomile, and crushed stones streaking across the palate, scented with wildflower honey and flicks of reduction that echo on the lingering finish.
