King Valley, Victoria, AustraliaI caught up with Australians Joel Pizzini and ex-Okanagan winemaker Phil McGahn (Checkmate Artisanal Winery) to taste several wines they've been working on, starting with this entry level Pinot Grigio. The Pizzini family has collaborated with legendary Tuscan winemaker consultant Alberto Antonini and Chilean soil expert Pedro Parra to improve their viticultural and winemaking skills, and their progress has been impressive. The normale grigio exemplifies the Italian philosophy that wine is meant to reset the appetite, not dominate it. Expect a refreshing white that is entirely dry, with plenty of freshness and subtle hints of pear and citrus, set against a savoury, herbal backbone that makes your mouth water.
