Pizzini L'Aquila Nebbiolo 2023

King Valley, Victoria, AustraliaThe Pizzini family, once the largest tobacco growers in the southern hemisphere, transitioned from tobacco farming to winemaking in the late 1970s and launched their first commercial wines in 1994. Their focus was on Italian grape varieties, with nebbiolo among the earliest and most significant. Today, they boast over 30 consecutive nebbiolo harvests, making it the longest streak outside of Italy. L'Aquila, or eagle, has been planted since 2003 to clone 220 on the highest, driest ridges and steep slopes in King Valley, resulting in the richest nebbiolo they make at Pizzini. The resulting wine is medium pale after ageing for around 38 months, with 18 to 20 of those in mostly older wood. The nose features a subtle floral rose petal edge with cherry notes. The palate is dry, savoury, earthy and spicy, with leather and refined tannins that build long term structure without any harshness. In the end, the perfume and silky texture leave you wanting more after every sip. Still a baby, but its balance portends a favourable result in the bottle for the next decade.Tasted: 25 July 2025Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
