CheckMate Artisanal Winery Little Pawn Chardonnay Jagged Rock Vineyard 2022
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaLittle Pawn has always been among the most reductive Checkmate chardonnay, and it's no different in 2022. It is grown on the sands of the highly acclaimed Jagged Rock Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench, 378 meters above sea level, southeast of the town of Oliver. Dijon 76, with its joyous stone fruit, makes up more than half the blend, joined by the Dekleva clone planted by John Simes in the late 1990s. The 22 is 75% wild fermented, and 90% of the wine is barrel aged in new French oak for 16 months with an addition of 10% aged in concrete. Certified organic, the alcohol checks in at 13.4%. Precision agriculture has led to no-maintenance vines with self-limiting yields, intensifying their vibrant floral and melon. On the palate, citrus and peach are accompanied by mineral salinity. Fresh and elegant, it's Next World chardonnay.
