Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe current Fool's Mate continues down the road to complexity, leading with subtle yet intoxicating orchard fruit. On the palate, pears and apricots mix with citrus and minerals, complemented by fresh acidity that tightens the wine from within. The finish is long and persistent with early morning bakery notes. Fool's Mate is the only multi-vineyard blended chardonnay made at Checkmate, involving four individual sites. In 2022, a largely lauded vintage, the breakdown was 32% Dekelva-Combret Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench, with the remaining 68% distributed among 31% Sunset Vineyard, 30% Jagged Rock Vineyard, and 7% Border Vista Vineyard, which is located on the east side of the Valley. Those sites include a mix of chardonnay clones, including Dijon 76 and 95, Hyde-Wente 548, and 1066, grown at varying elevations between 315 and 400 metres. Only 18% of the fruit is fermented wild. 66% was aged in French oak barriques, of which half were new, while 34% went into larger foudres.Tasted: 30 June 2025Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
