Blue Grouse Pinot Noir 2022

Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, CanadaBlue Grouse Estate has a long history of stewardship, aiming to make everything they touch better than it was when they found it. It is safe to say over the past decade, everything has been better, but when I taste this pinot, the best is yet to come. Hand harvested at the end of September and into mid-October, grapes were either destemmed or fermented whole cluster in terracotta amphorae or small square fermenters while keeping the clones separate. Post-ferment, it spends 20 months in nearly all neutral French oak barrels and puncheons before a final blend of the best lots. Silky, ethereal, and more vibrant than most pinots. The red fruit and savoury forest floor notes speak to the three different terroirs in the blend: the warmer Saison Vineyard; the historic, established Kiltz Vineyard; and Blue Grouse’s younger estate vines that supply the tension and acidity.
