Yalumba The Octavius Barossa Old Vine Shiraz 2019
Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaA flagship Yalumba shiraz began life in 1854 in the Eden Valley and is among some of the oldest shiraz plantings in the world. All five vineyards across the Barossa are involved in the blend, with an average vine age of 104 years. The mix is 55% Eden Valley and 45% Barossa Valley, all aged 23 months in 30% new oak, some of that being Yalumba coopered 100 litre oak octaves, the inspiration behind its name. 2018 opened with a cold winter, with lower rainfall than average that continued through the growing season, concentrating the fruit. Look for fragrant aromatic florals, savoury black and red fruits, bacon fat, and meaty, peppery notes. The texture is smooth and long with dense, sweet tannins that cushion the finish. The exotic notes come from the Eden Valley, while the richness and density are Barossa-born. There is also a mineral undercurrent and some brown spice pushing through the finish easily.
