Maison Smith Montpetit Merlot 2023

Cawston, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Maison Smith Monpetit's mission statement is to craft minimal intervention organic wines that reflect its fruit and origins in the lower Similkameen Valley. The 2023 crop was small thanks to an early deep freeze, but the quality of the fruit left was more than respectable. Merlot's calling card is softness, which this wine has, but lacks the intensity and electricity I tasted in the very fine 2022. The nose and palate open with floral, stony Similkameen notes followed by reduced meaty notes, black fruits, and tobacco. It is aged one year in 30% new French oak and 70% neutral Hungarian and French oak barrels. Unfiltered and unfined.Tasted: 24 February 2025Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
