Haywire Merlot 2022

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe ultra-modern Haywire style reflects British Columbia’s cool climate terroir, red fruit, and bright acidity. These are unlike most merlots made worldwide, and they surprise the palate. In the case of this single vineyard 2022 merlot from Naramata’s King Family Vineyard, the difference maker is its fermentation in concrete, gentle basket pressing to barrel, and finally, ageing in French oak barrels with only 30% new wood. The texture is the story here, and the smooth, silky nature reminds me of top-flight merlot from Italy and France. Still, the difference alluded to earlier is the wine's freshness, brightness, and lift, even at 14% alcohol. This would suit the dinner table where freshness accompanies favourite fatty dishes.Tasted: 04 February 2025Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
