Rodney Strong Chardonnay Chalk Hill 2021
Chalk Hill, Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United StatesRod Strong was the first to plant Chardonnay in what would later be recognized as the Chalk Hill AVA (American Viticultural Area) in 1965, 18 years before the AVA was approved. He thought the region was distinct from the rest of the Russian River Valley for its unique, volcanically derived, chalky white ash soils, and guess what? He was right. The 2021 is one of the best I have tasted, led by a medium weight and slightly higher acid underside. The nose is an apple and pie crust affair with just a whiff of oak. The palate is fresh, filled with pear, creamy textures, and non-obtrusive oak. It is fun to drink right down to its mineral, citrus finish. Rodney Strong has been tweaking its style for almost a decade, slowly tightening its wines, and the improvements are noticeable.
