Douro Superior, Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalIt was a perfect year for grapes, with no significant weather events leading to a 17% increase in production compared to 2020. The ’21 Meãndro Red blend is a 45/38/10/3/2 of touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, tinta barroca, and alicante bouschet. The winery is a progressive yet classic producer, employing a temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation on fruit that is still trodden by foot for 4 hours in ancient stone lagares before aging in 2-3 year old Allier French oak barriques for 14 months. Douro black, with bright florals and rich, ripe, wild black fruits. There is plenty of intensity in the mineral and savoury black pepper finish. Drink or hold through 2031. The wine gets its name from the giant bend or meander of the Douro River that wraps around the Meão vineyard.
