Matanzas Creek Chenin Blanc 2023
California, United StatesMatanzas Creek Winery has been making quality wines since 1977 and taking chances in a region slow to evolve beyond cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. This rare chenin blanc was picked early from three vineyards: River Junction, California's smallest AVA located south of Lodi, around Ripon; Alexander Valley; and Mendocino County from the coolish 2023 vintage. This did not go through malolactic fermentation, keeping it fresh and tight. The wine was aged in a mix of stainless steel, neutral French oak barrels, and puncheons to add a bit of complexity. The nose is muted with subtle hints of lemongrass, pear, and green apples. Light pear and mineral notes rule the palate, while the finish is somewhat lengthy.
