Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, SpainThis enjoyable, somewhat old style classic Rioja blends mostly tempranillo with additions of graciano and mazuela. The nose is an earthy dried strawberry affair that spends six months in wood and is barely detectable in the glass. The palate is full flavoured with cedar and red cherries that finish with spicy balsamic. The tannins are dry but well managed and need another two years to dissipate. This is a perfect red for lamb chops or pork at the moment. The vines planted between 1930 and 1990 are dry framed and grow free of herbicides and pesticides.
