AustraliaHusband and wife duo Brendan and Laura Carter started Imp Zelo in 2012 to shine a light on the numerous Italian varieties planted in Oz, now shining in the face of climate change. This skin contact white blend is based on zibbibo (with backup roles from moscato giallo, gewurztraminer, greco, and fiano) and sourced from sandy limestone soils of Barmera, Riverland and Polish Hill River, Clare Valley. The slight haze illustrates its non-interventionist winemaking, while the deep golden hue hints of time on skins. There were no additions or deletions save for a wee tip of SO2 at bottling. Lime blossoms, apricot, tangerine pith and peel, white honey, and fresh ginger are scented with soap bubbles (hello Gew!) and subtly textured (hello skins!), finishing with a raspy white pepper note on a juicy, bone-dry frame. At 10%, this is a slight and friendly foray into skin contact whites.
