Lingua Franca Avni Chardonnay 2021

Willamette Valley, Oregon, United StatesAvni is Latin for stone, or rock, and a hallmark of the Willamette Valley. I love the complexity that begins with mineral and flinty notes intermingled with citrus and white florals, all electrified by some bright acid that belies the wine's barrel fermentation and aging regime. The palate is a delightful mix of pears, citrus, and green apples dusted in dried herbs with a kiss of vanilla and an extra creamy mouthfeel. Avni 2021 is made from various Willamette sites. However, most of the Dijon clone vines come off the shallow volcanic soils of the Lingua Franca Estate, with additions from volcanic vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains and Yamhill-Carlton, and old marine sediments in the Van Duzer Corridor. The fermentation is wild, and the juice is barrel fermented and aged in 21% new 600 litre puncheons, 16% in large wooden casks, and 63% old French oak barriques for 11 months. Then, in a classic Burgundian tightening technique, the wines return to stainless steel tanks for six months before bottling.Tasted: 02 November 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
