Champagne Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier d'Or 1er Cru 2019

Montagne de Reims, Champagne, FranceThough technically not a Grower Champagne (RM) due to Vilmart & Cie sourcing some grapes from around their Rilly-la-Montagne home base, they are certainly in the same authentic, hands-on, small-scale league. Grand Cellier d'Or is 1er cru chardonnay (80%) and pinot noir (20%) from vines 50+ years off their estate Les Blanche Voix vineyard and it's super chalky soils. My bottle is based on 2022, native fermented (no MLF) and aged in 228L oak barrels and foudre over 10 months before heading to bottle, and including 50% reserves from 2021 and 2020. It was disgorged July 2024 with 8 g/L. Smouldering red and white cherry, crushed stones is corseted with chardonnay's firm acidity, and bone with pinot's firm structure. Meringue, cherry, red licorice, and wild herbs fill the core, while the finish lingers with persistant salinity and oyster liqueur. A beautiful bottle that expands in the glass, drinking now and with time ahead.Tasted: 14 September 2026Tasted by: Prices:
