Pepe Mendoza Giró de Abargues 2019
Alicante, Valencia and Murcia, SpainPepe Mendoza is one of the most talented and recognized winemakers in Spain, starting in youth helping his father, the founder of the prestigious Grandes Pagos inducted Bodegas Enrique Mendoza in Alicante. After studies in Viticulture and Enology, and winemaking stints around the globe, Pepe returned home to Alicante and took over leading the family business. Casa Agricola is Pepe dream 25 years in the making, teaming up with his wife Pepa Agulló Llorca and their children. They focus on local Mediterranean low yield varieties sourced from their own mostly dry farmed vineyards, and vines up to 80 years. Giró is an ancient variety, first mentioned back in 1500, and today there is only around 90ha left in the world, found only in Alicante, Mallorca, and Sardinia (the grape is said to love the sea). This is from 80 year old vines, in sandy, calcareous, and ferrous laced soils. It was fermented in stainless before resting 1 year in 500L French oak. Wild cherry, pomegranate, perfumed black raspberry, scrubby resinous herbs rolls through the structural palate, with an easy buoyant acidity holding the 14.5% at bay, and long, subtly toothsome tannins framing. The finish lingers with crushed rosemary and ferrous stones. Quite a singular wine, drinking beautifully now.Tasted: 07 July 2024Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $77.00 | 750ml | private wine stores |
