Mason Vineyard L'avenir Chardonnay 2021

Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaThe ’21 L’avenir is the inaugural release of Mason’s chardonnay, first planted in 2018, so at three years, the vines are at best rambunctious. The alcohol is a modest 12.5 percent, which speaks to its structure, although having said that, tasted alongside 2022, the ’21 appears to have just a bit more weight and honey and a little less minerality. It was wild fermented in a barrel and aged for 24 months in a mix of neutral oak and a single, second-fill barrel. The finish is more decadent, with brown butter and toffee in the denouement before the acidity cuts through and cleans up the palate. An impressive launch if already surpassed by the 2022, it has long been sold out. If you have some, I suggest you drink it sooner rather than later.Tasted: 24 July 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
