Garnet Valley Ranch Chardonnay 2022

Garnet Valley, Summerland Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe 2022 Garnet Valley Ranch Chardonnay, grown between 600-680 metres above sea level, is finally in full bloom. The vision was always a wine like this, and with a decade of hard work completed, GVR is only beginning its story. The ’22 is whole cluster pressed, fermented in concrete, and aged in a mix of concrete and stainless. Winemaker Matt Dumayne has upped the weight in this version and, together with its inherent spare, high latitude, cool climate style, has produced an impressive, creamy, textured chardonnay packed with savoury scrub, mineral notes, citrus, and freshly cut green apples complexed by light lees and some reduction. Stock up, as this is a keeper. Garnet Valley is a magical place, as is the eponymous Garnet Valley Ranch. The Coletta/Lornie property is coming into its own in 2024 after some early but important help from famous wine folks. The 130-hectare Summerland property was purchased in 2013 at the urging of Chilean terroir consultant Pedro Parra, who designed fifteen unique vineyard blocks, employing extensive research to determine viticulture strategies. The first blocks were planted in 2014 with guidance from Alberto Antonini and David Scholefield. As of 2023, the site has 18 ha of vines: pinot noir, gamay noir, chardonnay, riesling, and chenin blanc, planted in volcanic and glacial matter (including alluvial course sand with limestone and rock) that varies from block to block. To date, a handful of low-intervention organic wines under the Free Form label have been released, along with a few limited edition Garnet Valley Ranch labels.Tasted: 14 May 2024Tasted by: Prices:
