Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe Super South Okanagan red blends 12% sangiovese with merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc. The wine is typically elegant and mid-weight in structure with reasonably intense red fruit and incredible finesse. But in 2021, instead of the complexing desert scrub savoury notes, it is marked by a smoky, campfire undercurrent that runs through the whole wine. I’m told there is a market for smoky wines, which is good for the winery and for a wine that is so well made otherwise, but I will not score the wine this year.
