Alois Lageder Porer Pinot Grigio 2021
Trentino- Alto-Adige, ItalyWe seldom consider Alto Adige pinot grigio a typical northern Italian white. At Alois Lageder, it is more like a religion. The Porer is a good example of their wine growing philosophy, farmed according to biodynamic methods, and Demeter certified. The vines, 13-32 years old, are grown at Magrè and Salorno, and sit at an altitude of 230 to 240 metres over stony, sandy soils with a high content of limestone. The fermentation is spontaneous, with a part in large casks and another in stainless steel tanks. The ageing, 9 months, is done in the same vessels. Throughout the vinification, the winery plays with a mix of techniques: classic vinification, short skin contact, extended time on the lees, and partly whole-cluster ferments. The result is a sophisticated white with plenty of texture and style. The palate is a fresh mix of citrus, melons, and minerals that finish earthy and dry. The winery recommends patés and terrines for pairing, and I recommend Dungeness crab or a summer pea risotto.Tasted: 12 May 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $49.99 | 750ml | BCL Stores |
