Matua Valley Sauvignon Blanc Lighter 2023

Marlborough, South Island, New ZealandMatua is said to have produced New Zealand's first sauvignon blanc in 1974 in Auckland, and they've been pioneering ever since. This Lighter label clocks in at 8.5% alcohol, and is 25% lower in calories as well (as you can read from the giant nutritional label on the back) compared to the standard Matua Sauvy. They really want you to drink Lighter well chilled, instructing you to wait until a little snowflake appears on the front label, indicating the wine is at temperature (7 degrees celsius). Many things here make me sceptical, though it certainly does have all the taste hallmarks of Marlborough SB. Green and grassy, with underripe papaya, pineapple skin, and lime rind on a brief, somewhat watery palate, finishing with a grapefruit twist. If you're looking for a lighter option that handles a big chill, you can try this. If you're looking for a lighter handed option however, look elsewhere.Tasted: 12 April 2024Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
