Maison Smith Monpetit Merlot 2022

Cawston, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe mission statement at Maison Smith Monpetit is to craft minimal intervention organic wines that bring out the qualities and singularities of the fruit, honouring the unique terroir and aromas of the lower Similkameen Valley, Canada’s organic growing capital. Easy to say, not so easy to do, but winemaker Erich Smith-Peter is on point, and frankly, I have been knocked out by his first few releases that walk the walk. This merlot is electric, pitching stony, raspberry, black cherry, dusted in Similkameen desert scrub and tobacco, refreshed with the perfect level of acidity. Wild and windy seems to have helped this wine stay within itself, and one ton to the acre yields injects the perfect amount of intensity to lure you back to the glass. The merlot is barrel aged in 20% neutral Hungarian oak, 30% new French oak, and 50% neutral French oak. A winner by any standard and a testament to the potential of the Similkameen.Tasted: 13 April 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
