Little Engine Gold Merlot 2020

Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaA stellar vintage has yielded an excellent Gold Merlot in 2020. The fruit is all hand harvested, sorted in the vineyard, and the grapes are destemmed into one ton fermenters, ensuring a high proportion of whole berries. After 6-7 days of cold soak, the musts are gradually warmed up to initiate a natural fermentation. Hand plunging is used to keep the cap moist and ensure colour and tannin extraction. The result is a concentrated, rich, dark cherry and brambleberry nose accompanied by refreshing florals. On the palate, it is round and expansive with sweet black plums leading the way, bright acidity, and a warm but balanced finish. This is a fine example of serious wine, that just when you think is heading over the top, it is pulled back in by some dry desert scrub and a cranberry undercurrent. Drink or hold, but serve with a rare T-bone for best results. The fruit is sourced primarily from the estate Corbishley Vineyard. It is aged for 16 months in French oak in 55% new oak puncheons and barrels, and the balance in second and third year barrels.Tasted: 19 April 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
