Pieri Agostina Rosso di Montalcino 2020
Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, ItalyFrancesco Monaci, nephew of Consorzio President and famed producer, Giancarlo Pacenti, had long wanted to make wine in Montalcino, and finally found his dream Castelnuovo dell’Abate vineyard in 1991. His steep, 7 ha vineyard is planted to older Sangiovese clones. His Rosso di Montalcino is still the only one to earn Gambero Rosso’s prestigious Tre Bicchieri score, setting a benchmark for the appellation in 1995. From galestro and calcareous clays, this was fermented in stainless before spending 1 year in older barriques. Savoury and herbal, with thyme and balsam woven throughout wild cherry and raspberry on the textural palate. Tannins are long and gently strident, well absorbed into the generous palate, and guiding through a stony, saline finish. Though there is obvious density, there is also a lifted freshness, thanks to site, soils, and thoughtfulness. Super serious, and super charming, drinking now and with time in your cellar also. Hits WAY about its humble Rosso name.Tasted: 19 March 2024Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $40.00 | 750ml | private wine stores |
