Kono Pinot Noir 2021

South Island, New ZealandMarlborough pinot has a juicy, unpretentious style playing off the soft, round, mouthfilling fruit that sliders down easily. It is the kind of New World pinot many pinot producers should ape. The chance of making a great DRC Burgundy right out of the gate is frankly zero, and pursuing that could leave an awkward, unbalanced pinot that does your brand no favours. Slow and steady wins the race. The Kono Pinot is a black cherry affair flecked with baking spices and wild herbs on the nose with juicy, plummy fruit and just a touch of French oak to pull it all together. It is all batch fermented in small open-top vessels. Most of the fruit is sourced from Marlborough Valley's subregion of Awatere Valley, and the other third from the Moutere Hills area of Nelson. I suggest a mushroom pasta or pizza dish, or a medium soft cheese. Good value.Tasted: 22 March 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
