Escorihuela 1884 Gran Reserva Malbec 2021

Mendoza, ArgentinaThe Gran Reserva labels come out of the heart of the Agrelo estate in Lujan de Cuyo, consistently revealing the terroir's highest expression. The vines grow over homogeneous sandy loam soils on a site flushed daily by cool mountain air coming off the Andes. In 2021, spring frost lowered the yields across the province of Mendoza, delivering some impressive red grapes. I have been impressed by what is going on at this winery at the high end, and this wine is no exception. The purity of malbec is on full display here, where it is aged for 12 months in French oak and 12 more months in the bottle. The nose and palate are awash in fresh plums, floral undertones, and bright raspberry jam, with a perfectly spicy smoky finish. It's complex but in a fun way. Serve this with anything from beef tacos or empanadas to lamb shanks or aubergine casserole.Tasted: 29 March 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
