Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2020
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe 2020 Alexander Valley Cab is a 90/5/5 mix of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and malbec that spends 18 months in French oak barrels, of which half were new. Sonoma has a recognizable savoury dried herb, rosemary/sage/thyme nuance that enriches the wine. The Alexander Valley mix is a big step from the regular label in intensity and length on the palate. It's not super complex, but then, neither is it simple. 2020 was another dry growing season, with only a few spring showers, mild temperatures, and generally lower yields at harvest. Balanced and content on the vine, the fruit was harvested over 27 days from September 4 to October 1. It opens with lavish Sonoma flavours (thankfully less than Napa) of cassis, milk chocolate, dark plum, and ripe fig. Plenty of tannin and cabernet structure suggests ageing will be helpful for three to five years before it reaches its maximum drinking window. Polished and smooth, this is all you could want in a modern Alexander Valley cab.Tasted: 10 January 2024Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $32.99 | 750ml | select private retailers; monopolies |
