Keremeos, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThere is a reason why we mention the consistency from year to year with Capella. It is consistently well made. Capella is the flagship Clos du Soleil white, and in 2022, the blend is 71/29 sauvignon blanc / sémillon in what the older crowd would know as a classic Bordeaux mix. Not surprisingly, the palate is lively, pitching lemons, grapefruit and gooseberry dusted in the Similkameen's secret sauce: desert sagebrush. Elegant and drinkable now with fresh oysters, clams, or mussels. The fruit comes from Whispered Secret Vineyard, Keremeos (Sauvignon Blanc); and Les Collines Vineyard, Keremeos (Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon). Each vineyard block was separately harvested by hand, and the grapes were gently crushed and destemmed, cold-soaked on the skins for 3 hours, and then fermented entirely in French oak puncheons, with the majority undergoing only wild, spontaneous fermentation. Ten percent of the barrels were also allowed to undergo wild malolactic fermentation. It was aged for nine months on the lees, with stirring. Clos du Soleil Capella 2022

Keremeos, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, CanadaTheir flagship white wine, 2021 Capella 2022 blends 71% sauvignon blanc with 29% sémillon, from two Keremeos vineyards (no Oliver fruit this year). Each block was picked and fermented separately, crushed and destemmed and cold soaked on skins for 3 hours before a partial native ferment in French puncheons, with 10% of barrels undergoing MLF. All lots were aged for 9 months with bâtonnage prior to final blending. Though the sauvignon is naturally up front and present, with its shining white grapefruit, bright lemon, and crunchy gooseberry, it's the sémillon that seals this wine for me, with a slippery, oily undercurrent drawing dried sage, verbena, and kisses of anise through the lingering stony finish. The juice was barrel fermented in French puncheons using ambient yeast, and then aged for nine months on its lees. It's restrained and elegant, with a combination of white grapefruit and lemon that beautifully reflects the more moderate 2022 vintage, all lifted by perfumed honeysuckle and sagebrush aromatics. Textured and precise, with excellent concentration and tension, this needs another few years in bottle to really show its potential.
