Thompson Valley, British Columbia, CanadaMichael Bartier has much experience making riesling in the south Thompson River Valley consulting for others, but I asked why not make your own wine and sell it under the Bartier label. 2022 is a stunning South Thompson River Valley riesling, hand picked the day before Halloween. The fruit is grown on sandy silts over limestone bedrock. It is whole cluster pressed, and native fermented in stainless steel tanks. Post ferment racking from lees is followed by a brief 3 months in the tank. This is off-dry, yet seemingly dry, thanks to what Michael calls a “galvanizing acidity.” Lemons and minerals dominate from front to back, and are perfectly balanced. Ready to drink, and keep your hand on the bottle at parties because it will be gone in seconds. This wine is incredibly fruity, mineral and intense, with a long finish. This will age gracefully for decades. The chemistry is poetic: pH 2.71, RS 12.8 g/L, TA 9.1 g/L and modest alcohol at 10.8%.Tasted: 01 June 2024Tasted by: Prices:

Thompson Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis Thompson Valley riesling is rooted in sandy silt soils over limestone, and was whole cluster pressed and native fermented in stainless, where it ages on lees for 3 months. Super sharp acidity drives this snappy riesling, but comes up against some lactic cheesy lees on the palate, detracting from the purity. Lime blossom and peel, green melon, and crunchy green apple work the sleek palate, bumped with sugar which finishes this bluntly. Thompson Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe first riesling to be released from Bartier Bros. since 2015 is a snappy, lip-smacking one, sourced from the limestone-rich soils of the Thompson River Valley, which gives this a backbone of stony minerality. This shows real verve and tension, tremendously balanced with 13 g/L residual sugar that washes away thanks to the crisp acidity, leading to a dry, refreshing finish. It's the type of wine that we would happily drink any day of the week, and it's only going to get better with time in bottle. Tuck away a six-pack if you can and revisit over the next 10 years.
