Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2016
Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, ItalyOne of Montalcino’s largest wineries, Tenuta Il Poggione sits on 600 hectares, of which 125 are covered in vines. Its wine history began at the end of the 19th century when Lavinio Franceschi purchased the estate, and today, Leopoldo Franceschi represents the current generation comfortably in the hands of a dream winemaking team of Fabrizio Bindocci and his son Alessandro. The wine is grown from 200-400m vineyards around Sant'Angelo in Colle, south of Montalcino hill. The Riserva Vigna Paganelli is produced only in the finest years and in small amounts from vines planted in 1964, making them the oldest on the estate. This clone is a reference for all new plantings. The 2016 comes from a highly lauded vintage marrying the best aspects of top-flight Brunello: power, elegance, intensity and staying power. There is a fullness here, pitching plenty of cassis and black cherry streaked with savoury dried herbs, smoke, and earth. Despite all that is going on, it’s a stunning mouthful of wine that is in balance and shows the elegance for which the region can be famous. You can start drinking this now or hold it through 2026. This needs a rich piece of protein and some mushrooms at the moment.Tasted: 07 November 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $127.99 | 750ml | select private retailers |
