Gramona Imperial Brut 2017
Penedès, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainThis biodynamic brut leads with a slight majority of xarel.lo, followed by macabeo, and equal parts parelleda and chardonnay (each base wine fermented separately). 2017 was the first year of Demeter biodynamic certification across the 13 winemakers of the collective Alliances per la Terra association, founded by Gramona in 2015 to unite like-minded growers in the area. This bottle spent 62 months on lees and was disgorged in June 2023. Green and red apple lead into toasted brioche, slicked with anise, and wrapped around a doughy lemon core, finishing with a more toasted biscuit. Friendly and generous, this is undoubtedly a step above Cava and worth seeking out.
