Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaEight months from our last look, the style remains earthy and reserved, with more mushroom and forest floor than cranberry. The textures are silky but with light tannins yet to shed in a spicy finish. The wine is stainless steel fermented over two weeks and basket pressed into a combination of 1, 2, and 3 year old French barriques, and aged for nine months. The final alcohol is a welcomed 12.8%. Ben Bryant and Katie Truscott own the current iteration of One Mill Road, and this is their first bottling of Black Pine Vineyard, a 1.6 hectare site on the Naramata Bench planted to four pinot clones. Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIt’s year one for Black Pine, a Naramata Bench vineyard whose pinot portion is planted to clones 667, 777, 115, and Pommard, joining two other Home Block pinot offerings. The 1-6 hectare bony, dry granite site is farmed by growers Kathi and Rick Prosser. 2022 was a long growing season, bringing the intensity of flavours, which is never a bad thing with northern pinot noir. Post ferment, it spent nine months in one, two and three-year-old oak before the final blend. The palate is a dusty, earthy, red fruit affair with cranberry, cherry, dried spices, and desert scrub. This is the first release from this vineyard for Ben Bryant and Katie Truscott, and it's a solid start. At this early stage, the whole cluster use feels quite evident, adding stemmy spices on top of the crunchy red berries. Naramata Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is the inaugural vintage of Black Pine single vineyard from 1 Mill Road. It joins their Home Block and Block Two pinot noirs. Loganberry, blueberry, forest floor, a touch of licorice and darker fruits sit on the nose. In the glass, graphite, blueberry, juicy acidity and a savoury flavour intensity combined with very restrained alcohol should foretell a bright future. It does not show much complexity and retains some tannic grip, but the finish is long and rich. Promising, but needs cellar time. The Black Pine Vineyard is a 4-acre vineyard on the Naramata Bench. The Pinot Noir portion of the vineyard is planted to clones 667, 777, 115, and Pommard. 19% of the picked grapes were left as whole bunch clusters. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks for 14 days, then basket pressed into a combination of 1, 2, and 3 year old French oak barriques for nine months until blending.
