Tyrrell's Vat 1 Hunter Sémillon Winemaker's Selection 2017

Hunter, New South Wales, AustraliaVat 1 Sémillon comes off dry framed, old vines rooted in primarily sandy and free draining soils, giving the wine unique character (note BC growers). The oldest block here was planted in 1923. 2017 is one of the best growing seasons in recent memory and is reflected in the glass. The bunches are hand harvested and carefully sorted in the vineyard. The fermentation is cool and in stainless steel tanks. From here, the wine spends a year on its lees but sees no wood at any point before bottling. At six years, it is just starting to build weight in the bottle. The nose is a grassy, waxy, talcum powder affair. At the same time, the palate is clean, fresh, and intense from front to back with lemon, lime, lemon curd, and a lightly nutty character building in the finish. First rate and what that will remain for another decade and beyond. A true icon of Australian wine.Tasted: 16 August 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
