Vinos de Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, SpainThis tempranillo is grown on calcareous clay mixed with a fair amount of red clay on the surface, made just outside Madrid in Colmenar de Oreja and Chinchón. Time on skins totals 30 days, with aging in 500 litre used French oak barrels. The style is rustic, but this wine has a history of living a long time in bottle. The nose is full blown with blackcurrant streaked with anise. The palate is rich in blueberries and black fruit, and the texture is smoother than you might expect, with some warmth in a spicy finish. The tannins are present but mostly well-managed. It is not Rioja but more like the Moon Curser bottle out of the South Okanagan.
