Chain Reaction Chardonnay 2021
British Columbia, CanadaTheir 2021 Chardonnay is their first vintage of estate chardonnay from young vines planted in 2019. Such small yields resulted in a mere 15 cases of wine (!). This was fermented in a new French barrel and then aged in stainless, bottled without fining or filtration. The new wood makes itself apparent from the first whiff of toasted clove, cedar shavings, and cracked nutmeg, after which an expansive palate of ripe green apple, lemon custard, and doughy lees rolls out. There is a spike of lemon pith acidity before the baking spices return to the finish. Quite an aspirational wine, to be sure (Diam10 cork!).
