Upper Bench Altitude 2019
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaAltitude is the flagship red at Upper Bench and likely the best I have seen yet. The mix is 75/25 cabernet sauvignon/merlot, spending 21 months in 30% new French oak. The cabernet leads here, showing plenty of muscle and spice, dragging the merlot into the mix just enough to soften the finish. Look for a savoury black fruit affair with rich balsamic and cedar, dark baking chocolate, and a dash of cola. Not for the timid, this needs time in the bottle or a big, rich, soft cheese to help round the edges.
