Jane Eyre Volnay 2020
Volnay, Côte de Beaune, Côte d'Or, Burgundy, FranceYou're quite right if you think Jane Eyre doesn't sound like a French name. But her wines have been a shining light of new wave-making wines in this hallowed region. Born in Australia, Jane did her first harvest in Burgundy in 1998, cementing her future links here. After stages with lauded names such as Mosel's Ernst Loosen and Chambolle-Musigny's Frédéric Mugnier, she began making her wines as a micro-négociant in 2011, sharing winery space with legend Dominique Lafon in Meursault. An actual flying winemaker, she also makes wines across Australia, making brilliant use of both hemispheres. The 2020 Volnay is both voluptuous and structured, with gobs of dusky black plum, ripe wild blackberry, sultry, aromatic florals, and savoury thorns balanced off with a tight framework of acidity and finely grippy tannins supporting a lingering, buzzing, saline finish—a beauty. As the Diam10 cork will agree, this is a wine meant to age, though it tastes lovely now in youth, thanks to the plumped 2020 vintage.Tasted: 18 June 2023Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:BC | $114.00 | 750ml | select private retailers |
