Coastal Region, South AfricaSpier’s Coastal Region pinotage fruit comes off 15-20-year-old vines fermented in stainless steel to keep it fresh and lively before a 14-month stay in an 80/20 split of French and American oak, of which about 30 percent was new. It is a rambunctious red with a rich palate of black plums, red berries, and some classic bitter notes of tobacco and tomato leaf, a la run-of-the-mill carmenere. The tannins are youthful and full and need some time to settle down, but this is a barbecue red for sweet and sour ribs at best.Tasted: 12 June 2023Tasted by: Prices:

Coastal Region, South AfricaFrom 15-20-year-old vines around the Coastal Region, this was destemmed and fermented in stainless over 15 days, prior to heading to 80% French / 20% American (30% new overall) to continue MLF and have a 14 months' rest before the final blend. Sticky/pasty tannins frame a silken palate of black plum, mulberry, and cherry, trailing off with a grippy and bitter tomato leaf and tobacco end. There is some freshness here, but a lighter touch would be appreciated in the future.Tasted: 05 May 2023Tasted by: Prices:
