Montes Taita 2017

Apalta Valley, Santa Cruz, Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileThe Taita vineyards are at the Marchigüe estate, at the cooler western end of the Colchagua Valley, 25 km from the Pacific Ocean. The soils are granite with varying levels of decomposition. Some have high clay content and moderate depth, while others are shallower, with less clay and more silt and rocks. The parcels dedicated to Taita sport glacial influence. The Taita vineyards are dry farmed, yielding fewer bunches of smaller, more concentrated grapes. As you might expect, the wine is intense, but the fruit is more red oriented thanks to its cool site. Notes of strawberries and raspberries dominate even after ageing 24 months in new French oak barrels. The final assemblage is then aged in oak foudres for another year before bottling. The textures are silky, and the finish is long, with baking spices dominating. This will need time, but it is an exciting take on Colchagua cabernet sauvignon. Cellar through 2024. Sourced in the Colchagua Valley at the El Arcángel de Marchigüe estate, this is 85 percent+ (vintage dependent) cabernet sauvignon. Taita is not produced every year.Tasted: 26 April 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
