Montes Alpha M 2020
Apalta Valley, Santa Cruz, Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileThe production of Montes Alpha M is always limited, with vintages requiring winemaker Aurelio Montes's blessing before going to bottle. The wine is surprisingly fresh thanks to more red fruits than black, and a savoury, cedar, black olive undercurrent. The back end mixes peppery meaty tobacco and some light chocolate. It is a mouthful yet polished, and showing some refinement. This will need five to seven years to integrate with the oak fully and become the M Aurelio likes to drink. For now, if you must drink it, think steak. The Denomination of Origin is Apalta Valley, Chile. The clones are 46C, 169 with smaller amounts of others. Yields are in the 3.5-4 tons per hectare, and in 2020 the 80/10/5/5 blend is a mix of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, and petit verdot. 70% of the wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, while the remainder is second and third use barrels.Tasted: 26 April 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $98.99 | 750ml | BCL Stores |
