Jean Paul Balland Sancerre Grande Cuvée 2020

Sancerre, Upper Loire, Loire, FranceThere is something about quality Sancerre that is captivating from the first scent. Apples, honeysuckle, pears, and candied nuts suggest this was a ripe year in Sancerre. Only a few producers make Sancerre that you might consider ageing, but Jean-Paul Balland is one of them, or should I say his daughter Isabelle, now that she is in charge of the winemaking. The regular label is well respected, but this Grande Cuvée is another level. 66 percent is aged for 15 months in large, 600-litre oak barrels to be later united with the remaining stainless steel aged fruit. I love the combination of minerality and edgy sauvignon notes with the riper, rounder barrel aged fruit. Complex and delicious, we served it with halibut cakes and it was the star.Tasted: 21 April 2023Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
